Chapter 5: First sign of gentlemanliness
"Hey Fanny. My dad can't drop us home today. So we're going to have to walk home."
"Oh yea Jenn! I forgot to tell you that my dad's going to be picking me up around 2:00 pm, cuz I gotta go for a doctor's appointment."
"Alright. Guess I'll find Alex to walk me home!!"
I live 45 minutes away from home and in a normal day, Fanny's dad would drop us home and my dad would pick us up from school; including my older sister. Today, my dad had his car in the body shop, and wasn't planning on getting a replacement car because the repair was going to last a day.
After half a day, I finally saw Alex during lunch.
"Hey Alex. Will you walk home with me? I know it's short notice but I can't get a ride so I'll need to walk home with somone."
"Sure thing Jenny!! I usually walk home with Bill, Tag and Neo. Sometimes Gabe comes along as well."
"Oh!!" I suppose I seemed disappointed because Alex eyed me suspiciously.
"Is something wrong, Jenny?" He nudged at me.
"um...no. I'm ok! So what are you having for lunch?"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Oh no!! I didn't bring my mittens and my hat!" One of the coldest day of winter and this is the day I choose to forget the essentials of keeping me warm. I can be so forgetful sometimes.
"Jenny ready to go? The guys are waiting downstairs."
"Alex hey! Yup, just let me get these notebooks. Damn my locker's messy."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Hey guys!" Trying to sound cheerful and keeping myself in control. Gabe was going to be walking home with us too. This is going to be one heck of a way to end the day.
"Boys." Alex greets.
"Ok, so let's go!!" Bill suggests, always eager to get home and play video games or sleep.
It wasn't as bad of a walk as I'd imagined. I kept to myself because it was so cold. We came to a point where we all had to seperate because of the different directions.
Tag and Neo walked in the east direction of their house, while Alex and Bill had to go west. I lived in the southwest direction so I chose to keep on walking in the south direction. Turns out, Gabe lived in the southeast direction and he, chose to keep me company.
[Not good. I don't know what to talk about. My mind was drawing a blank and I didn't want to seem too quiet nor too talkative either. Put into another words, I didn't want to seem too withdrawn nor too much of a chatterbox either.]
"So how was your day, Jenn?"
"I'm tired, it was an exhausting day. I think I'm going to sleep once I get home. How about you?"
"Same."
"Yea. It's awfully cold. I accidentally left my mittens and my tuque at home."
"Here, let me cover your ears."
Before I could decline his offer, he already took both his hands and covered my ears. He kept me wam for the rest of the 15 minute walk home. Like a true gentleman, he walked me to my door.
[Don't forget, he lives in the SouthEast direction and I was on the Southwest direction. The walk to my house from school was already 45 minutes. He walked for a full 45 minutes and another 30 minutes from my house to his. The weather was freezing to the point, where once you stepped out of your front door, your face would immediately feel the cold impact of ice, your body hair would just stick out. You'd be getting goosebumps the whole time you'd stay outdoors. He...he walked me home. What a gentleman he was....]
